Type a birth date into two “Mayan calendar” calculators and you may get two different answers. One may show a Tzolk'in day such as 11 Ik'. Another may show a colored seal, a galactic tone, and a Kin number. This usually means the calculators are using different systems under the same broad label.

The clearest way to find your result is to ask whether you want a date in the Traditional Maya calendar system, a result from the modern Dreamspell / 13 Moon system, or both shown separately. They can all be explored, but they should not be presented as if they were the same historical calendar.

The short answer

To find your Traditional Maya calendar date, convert your Gregorian birth date using a stated correlation constant. A complete result can include:

If you also request Dreamspell, the calculator separately shows a Kin number from 1 to 260, a galactic tone, a solar seal, and a 13 Moon position. Dreamspell is a modern symbolic system inspired in part by Maya calendrical ideas. Its labels should not replace the Traditional Maya date.

Step 1: Start with the exact birth date

For a date-only calendar conversion, the required input is normally the Gregorian year, month, and day. A birth time and birthplace are not required for the calculations used here.

Use the date as it appeared locally where the person was born. Do not shift it to another day because of a time-zone conversion. If someone was born just after midnight on August 7 in Tokyo, the input is August 7, even though it may still have been August 6 elsewhere.

Step 2: Read the Traditional Maya result first

The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian describes the Maya calendar as a system of interlocking cycles rather than a single equivalent of a Western zodiac sign. The best-known components include the Tzolk'in, Haab, Calendar Round, and Long Count.

Tzolk'in: 20 day signs and 13 numbers

The Tzolk'in, also called Chol Q'ij in K'iche' Maya communities, is a 260-day sacred cycle. It combines a repeating sequence of 20 named day signs with a repeating sequence of 13 numbers. A particular number-sign pair returns after 260 days, so the result is the pair, such as 11 Ik', not simply Ik'.

Names may vary by language and transliteration. A calculator should state which naming convention it uses instead of treating spelling differences as different signs.

Haab: the 365-day civil cycle

The Haab is a 365-day cycle made of 18 periods of 20 days plus the five-day Wayeb period. A result looks like a numbered day followed by a month name, such as 10 K'ank'in.

The Haab and Tzolk'in interlock. The same combination repeats after a Calendar Round of approximately 52 Haab years. This is another reason a single sign label cannot represent the whole calendar date.

Long Count: a position in a continuous day count

The Long Count records a date as five place values: baktun.katun.tun.uinal.kin.

Step 3: Check the correlation constant

A Gregorian date and a Long Count date need a rule that connects their starting points. That rule is called a correlation constant.

This project uses GMT 584283, the Goodman-Martinez-Thompson correlation. It maps the Long Count base date 13.0.0.0.0 to August 11, 3114 BCE in the proleptic Gregorian calendar and maps the next 13.0.0.0.0 to December 21, 2012.

Other proposed correlations exist. A two-day difference can appear when a source uses GMT+2, or 584285. A careful calculator therefore shows its correlation constant instead of hiding it.

Step 4: Treat Dreamspell as a separate modern layer

Many popular apps use the word “Kin” for a Dreamspell galactic signature. Dreamspell was developed by José and Lloydine Argüelles around 1990 and later became closely associated with the 13 Moon / 28-day calendar.

A Dreamspell result commonly includes a Kin number from 1 to 260, one of 13 galactic tones, one of 20 color-coded solar seals, a wavespell position, and a 13 Moon date. These can be used as prompts for reflection or journaling, but they are not the same as a Tzolk'in date calculated with a historical correlation constant.

MayanCalendar.xyz shows both because users search for both, while placing them in separate sections. Traditional Maya means Long Count, Tzolk'in, and Haab. Dreamspell means the modern Kin, tone, seal, and 13 Moon framework.

Why different calculators give different results

  1. System: Is the result Traditional Maya, Dreamspell, or a mixture?
  2. Correlation: Does the converter state GMT 584283, GMT+2, or another constant?
  3. Date handling: Did the tool keep the birthday as a local civil date?
  4. Naming convention: Are apparent differences only alternate spellings, such as Ajaw and Ahau?
  5. Leap-day rules: How does a 13 Moon implementation handle leap years?

How to read the result without treating it as fate

A calendar conversion is a calculation. A personality interpretation is a separate editorial layer.

Traditional Maya communities have living calendrical practices, and day meanings belong to specific cultural and ceremonial contexts. A general-purpose website should not claim to replace a trained Day Keeper or present a short automated reading as universal Maya belief.
